SAVOY | THE RESTORATION
Signed Copies available from The Savoy http://www.siobhandoran.com/shop.html
The book traces the work through four periods of the restoration project. It opens with the process of stripping out, which in many instances exposed original detail. The two following sections follow the painstaking structural restoration and its progression into the new designs. The final section covers the finishing touches of decoration and furnishing. In addition, the book includes an Introduction from Prince Alwaleed, an essay on the buildings history and the extent of its restoration. Siobhan narrates a short piece about her observations on the work at the beginning of each chapter; the 8 double spreads are illustrated to the rear with historical stories which form interesting factual narrative. This is followed by a full index locating each image within the building and the date that each photograph was taken. Finally, The Team of approximately 6,000 people that worked on this Restoration are listed in alphabetical order.

Savoy | The Restoration
Siobhan Doran has photographed the ambitious restoration of The Savoy, the world-renowned hotel on London’s Embankment. Built by impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte with profits from his Gilbert and Sullivan operas, the hotel opened on 6 August 1889. It enjoyed a resurgence of fame during the 1920s with both major art deco redecoration, and guests as varied as Noel Coward, Igor Stravinsky, Josephine Baker and George Gershwin.
The book traces the work through four periods of the restoration project. It opens with the process of stripping out, which in many instances exposed original detail. The two following sections follow the painstaking structural restoration and its progression into the new designs. The final section covers the finishing touches of decoration and furnishing. As the project developed Siobhan Doran became captivated by the hotel’s fifth-floor River Suites with their varied views across the Thames. Revisiting these rooms many times in the course of more than 100 visits to the hotel, she developed the concept of returning and remaking images, which she then expanded to embrace to other areas in the building. This approach also unconsciously reflects the many views and insights that the now-reopened hotel’s customers observe daily – depending on the season in which they visit, the length of their stay, the areas that they frequent and whether it is their first visit or one of many.
The book is a clothbound hardback with a printed image, 290mmx 290mm with 178 pages and 110 colour plates, ISBN: 978-1-907893-14-8, cost £40
Signed copies are available to pre order until the release date on 2nd November 2011

The City of London - Architectural Tradition and Innovation
View Pictures were commissioned by Thames and Hudson to capture the city of London in photographs. The book The City of London is published later this month by Thames & Hudson. As one of the photographers from View who captured this commission, I am looking forward to seeing my work in print and the completed book at the launch on October 17th. Both text and photography will give an invaluable up to date insight into the square mile. http://www.viewpictures.co.uk/
A major new illustrated celebration of the architecture and urban fabric at the heart of the world's greatest city. From its beginnings 2000 years ago as a Roman settlement, the City of London has evolved and thrived so that today it is one of the world’s great financial centres. Concentrated into its square mile is a rich mixture of buildings and public spaces that reflects the area’s extraordinary history. This book, edited by Nicholas Kenyon with contributions
from four distinguished architectural historians, guides both the newcomer and those familiar with the City through the amazing variety of buildings that range from the Norman Tower of London to Jean Nouvel’s extraordinary One New Change. Dividing the City into eight districts and featuring specific locations in each, the authors write about structures as varied as the Bank of England and Guildhall, the glorious Wren churches, the city livery halls and the Thames’ bridges. Illustrated with specially commissioned photographs and historical images, The City of London captures the magic and mystery of the ancient and modern urban environment that make the Square Mile so fascinating.

University of Westminster Harrow Campus Redevelopment is underway
University of Westminster redevelopment is underway. The first phase includes work to the existing library, which is almost complete in time for the new college year. Hawkins\Brown were appointed by the University of Westminster to masterplan and design the redevelopment of the University’s Harrow Campus.
I am commissioned by the University to document the change throughout the project, which is at present scheduled to take two years. I will be updating the progress on this blog from time to time, in particular when significant milestones are met. If you have similar projects and are interested in the documentation of them, please get in touch – my email is siobhan@siobhandoran.com

Book Printing Signed off!
I am just back from EBS offices in Verona, Italy. My book Savoy | The Restoration was being printed. It was a fascinating week understanding the process involved in Book Publishing. A printing day is made up of 3 shifts - for the Authors and Publishers this equates to long days so that you are on hand to approve each stage and page! At EBS the quality is superb and the expectation from all involved is perfection, or as near as this technology can allow. The results are beautiful crafted art books.
As I left late on Wednesday night there were pallets of my pages awaiting pick up for the binders... all very exciting and educational. I captured the photograph above as Dewi Lewis approved the final sheet. The book Savoy | The Restoration will be published by Dewi Lewis Publishing in November and details of its availability will follow. For any queries or pre-orders please get in touch http://www.dewilewispublishing.com/GENERAL/FORTHCOMING.html

The Mad Hatter's Tea Party
A selection of my photographs from my two forest series - One Year in Ashridge and In The Forest - are on show at Crest Living at 242 Brompton Road. Why not drop in for a Tea and Cupcake on Tuesday 20th September and enjoy the surrounding of chic modern furniture too! A number of the photographs are framed in non-reflective glass, although a more exspensive way to frame both Art and Photography, the clarity and visual impact is worth it. http://www.crestliving.co.uk/
